Artificial Intelligence in Small Embedded Systems

Majority of IoT solutions use data analysis at the Cloud level, collecting a huge amount of raw data from many thousands of peripherals. What if I told you that you can move from raw data collection to knowledge aggregation by implementing Artificial Intelligence into IoT systems?
During the talk, I will show the benefits of introducing AI at the earliest possible stages, applying the concept of moving from Cloud computing to Fog computing. The basic principle of constructing AIoT systems is the use of the node logic, where a node of the system has to process the provided information in a form of abstract concepts, but not in a form of raw information.
Further, the experience of one device learning and the history of its life cycle can be applied to new models, automatically programming their production cycles for the most efficient use. Actually, IoT solutions should apply AI components at each level of data transfer. Following this approach, the whole system becomes self-optimizing.
Also, during the talk, I will present related case studies and demonstrate a working stand.

Exceptions and interrupts on amd64: how OS drives the machine

The talk will explain how an operating system (and FreeBSD as the example) manages programs execution and how the exceptional situations, which are really not exceptional, provide the way for kernel to control the userspace.

Das U-boot v2019: a look under the hood

Das U-Boot is an open-source, universal boot loader, which has been the de-facto standard for booting Linux systems in embedded world. It's being used by top SoC vendors in their cutting edge products over the last decade. In this presentation we will cover in detail embedded Linux booting process and U-boot role in it, cover U-boot internals and architecture (including all updates up to v2019.10 version) and briefly overview the process of contributing your patches to U-boot open-source community.

Connected Mobility: from Vehicle to Cloud

Vehicle connection with the outside world is one of the modern trends of automotive industry development. The key element of connected vehicle is telematics control unit (TCU). From the one hand telematics unit interacts with electronic control units (ECUs) in vehicle, such as Head Unit, Board Control Module, etc. over CAN or Automotive Ethernet, from the other hand – with the cloud services via modem and CDMA\GSM\LTE networks. TCU provides a wide range of useful features: remote commands, remote diagnostics, Wi-Fi hotspot, car positioning, online traffic and hazard information besides the basic emergency call functionality. Telematics essentials and architecture as well as features implementation in details will be presented. Integration and homologation testing specifics will also be discussed.

Musings on OOP, Agile and The Unbearable Clarity of Being

The idea of the talk is to discuss various approaches and historical aspects of Software Architecture and Software Development Process. We'll focus on 2 specific examples, namely, Object-oriented Design and Agile.
Carl Hewitt and Alan Kay laid the foundation and coined the term OOP which has evolved in hands of Bjarne Stroustrup and his followers into something dramatically different. The result was widely commercialized in the early 90-s offering limitless code reuse possibility and bright future for everyone. The bright future has come. Code reuse - not so much.
We'll use open-source software including Linux kernel as a base for practical use cases.
Despite seemingly different areas whatsoever, the underlying idea behind the introduction of Agile Process methodology was pretty similar and bearing the same curse. While chasing the elusive goal of controlling chaos in software development for growing code base, it still to this day lacks scaling possibilities it meant to bring to the table in the first place.
We'll use examples from practical hands-on experience.

High FIVE: Samsung integrity protection of Android applications

The presentation introduces Samsung security solution called FIVE. It tracks integrity of Android processes in runtime, and detects malicious attempts to alter legitimate applications and system components.
We are going to talk about possible attack scenarios that tamper with integrity of applications, dive into process of Java application installation, and describe issues with calculating and checking integrity of native and Java components. Finally, we will show how FIVE solution protects integrity of Android applications in Samsung phones.
